This is a three-evening intensive in contemporary dance fusion. Learn how to express your physicality in a dynamic fashion and gain basic knowledge of the main principles of contemporary dance, with influences from other techniques. General level - suitable for both beginners and improvers.

What is the course about?

The course aims to give students a basic understanding of Contemporary dance that is influenced by other techniques, underpinned by Somatics practice, which is a field of bodywork which focuses on deepening awareness of the body through engaging with internal physical perception and experience. The course is taught to cater for a mixed ability group and approached to give students a centred and fluid understanding of the basic principles of Contemporary dance in a fun, fluid and enjoyable way.

What will we cover?

The course will give students’ a basic physical understanding of this fusion of dance cultures, focusing on: alignment, placement, posture, expression, spatial awareness, musicality, dynamic movement qualities, sensitivity in relationship to rhythm and beat, phrasing and stylistic features. Students will learn how to express their physicality in a dynamic fashion. During the course you will gain basic knowledge of the main principles of Contemporary dance incorporated with influences from other techniques.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

You will learn the fundamentals of posture and alignment, the use of dynamics, transfer of weight, and floor work. You will develop your musicality and spatial awareness by following step patterns, dance sequences and group formations set to a range of musical signatures. The course will allow you to lose your inhibitions, and gain confidence while moving, breathing and being.
Gain a more connected understanding of your anatomy and how to engage your body in fluid dance expression
Develop your co-ordination skills, flexibility, strength and stamina as well as develop your use of weight, breath and core strength to achieve greater dynamic quality within your dance expression.
Learn how to work with music in a more constructive and embodied manner to fully engage mind and body so as to enrich one’s physical experience of dancing.
Develop your understanding of the associated relationship between rhythm, movement and dance
Perform and execute dynamic dance sequence and steps that will reflect your engagement and embodiment of dance cultures in a synthesised fashion.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The class is pitched at general level, and requires students to have some basic experience of dance within a classroom based environment. The skills needed are basic co-ordination and a general level of fitness, equally these skills will develop further throughout the course.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is taught in a no-judgemental, friendly and supportive environment, delivered within a student centred learning strategy. You will be taught within a guided learning, group environment, through a variety of classroom based activities, demonstrations, explorations and various reflective processes. Students will receive feedback on a regular basis of their progress during the course. The learning strategy is grounded within the framework of reflective learning, where individuals are encouraged to take ownership for their development under the guidance of the course tutor. The course has a physical approach and is structured to help students take that step out of their comfort zone and into the unknown, through an experiential journey of exploration to unfold discovery.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.
