What is the course about?

Do you want to practise your speaking and listening skills in an engaging and supportive environment? Would you like to improve your fluency and confidence when expressing ideas in English?

This conversation club is designed for learners working towards Functional Skills English Level 1 and Level 2 who want to develop their discussion and presentation skills. Through interactive speaking and listening activities, learners will explore a range of current and everyday topics while practising the communication skills required for the Functional Skills Speaking, Listening and Communicating component.

Learners will practise identifying key ideas in explanations and presentations, asking relevant and detailed questions, expressing opinions with supporting evidence, and responding effectively in discussions. The course aims to build confidence in speaking English while developing effective communication strategies for both informal conversations and more structured discussions or presentations.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

By the end of the course learners will be able to demonstrate skills related to Functional Skills Speaking, Listening and Communicating at Level 1 and Level 2, including:

Level 1

  • Identify relevant information and lines of argument in explanations or presentations (L1.1)
  • Ask relevant questions and make requests to obtain information (L1.2)
  • Respond effectively to questions (L1.3)
  • Communicate ideas, information and opinions clearly and accurately (L1.4)
  • Express opinions and arguments supported with reasons or evidence (L1.5)
  • Follow discussions and make contributions relevant to the situation and topic (L1.6)
  • Use appropriate phrases and register depending on audience and context (L1.7)
  • Respect turn-taking in discussions (L1.8)

Level 2

  • Identify relevant information from extended explanations or presentations (L2.1)
  • Follow narratives and lines of argument (L2.2)
  • Respond effectively to detailed or extended questions and feedback (L2.3)
  • Ask detailed and pertinent questions to obtain specific information (L2.4)
  • Communicate ideas and opinions clearly with appropriate development and detail (L2.5)
  • Express opinions and arguments supported with relevant and persuasive evidence (L2.6)
  • Use language that is effective, accurate and appropriate to context (L2.7)
  • Make relevant and constructive contributions to move discussion forward (L2.8)
  • Adapt contributions to suit audience, purpose and communication context (L2.9)
  • Interject and redirect discussions appropriately using suitable language and register (L2.10)
