What is the course about?

This course is designed to help non-counsellors to develop effective listening, communication and support skills. It offers an opportunity to identify, explore and practice basic counselling and supportive skills. It also looks at how such skills might fit appropriately with the various roles that you find yourself in. This will involve considering what balance is needed between support, appropriate ‘boundaries’ and self-care.

What will we cover?

As non-specialists what can we offer to people in difficulty / distress?
Exploration, facilitation, guidance and advice
What does good listening look like?
Active listening and communication skills
Offering support within appropriate boundaries and limits
Signposting and referral
Caring for ourselves while caring for others.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Identify and use key active listening skills
Explain the difference between open and closed questions
Describe the role of questions in supportive conversations
Explain the difference between facilitation and guidance
Offer listening and support within appropriate limits with increased confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginners level course and no specialised skills are required. A willingness to work and share experience in pairs and groups is important.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will include: brainstorming; discussion in small and large groups; role-play and skills practice in pairs.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no additional costs. Students will receive handouts during the course.
