We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

The core conditions – central to Carl Rogers’ person-centred approach
Relevance of counselling skills for SLT’s
Listening and responding
Skills practice sessions with feedback – these will form a major part of the day
The role of questions.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Distinguish counselling skills from counselling
Identify the person-centred core conditions
Identify the relevance of counselling skills for SLTs
Describe the difference between ‘being’ and ‘doing’
Reflect on your use of paraphrasing, reflecting, summarising and questioning
Identify areas of strength and need from self-reflection and feedback received.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

To access the course you will need to have an adequate level of English to:
- Express your opinions and feelings
- Follow discussions and make relevant contributions
- Make use of handouts with some assistance if necessary

Before joining the class you will need to speak to one of the Speech Therapy team.

This course is most suitable for recently qualified speech and language therapists who have done little or no
counselling skills training, and for student speech and language therapists.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be a large experiential component to the course with a number of skills based practice sessions. There will be some theory input.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no additional costs. There will some pre-course reading to support your learning.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may choose to do further counselling/counselling skills training either at City Lit or elsewhere. City Lit has a 3 day 'Effective counselling skills for SLT’s course’ which may be a useful next step if you want to do further work in this area.
