What is the course about?

The course will introduce you to the CBT approach to Counselling and Psychotherapy, exploring how therapists use the theory in their work.

What will we cover?

The course will cover such topics as:

  • the historical background to the current CBT practice
  • Key beliefs and concepts
  • ABC technique
  • Irrational thoughts
  • Socratic questioning

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • describe key elements of the theory
  • outline the application of this approach in a therapeutic relationship
  • recognise some differences between this approach and others.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is introductory level and is aimed at students who have little or no knowledge of CBT. It is also suitable for trainee and practising counsellors who want to know more about CBT. It is not a substitute for therapy itself, rather a general introduction to CBT.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Tutor input i.e. handouts and discussions; role play exercises and case studies. You will also be asked to complete a written review of 1,000 words reflecting on your learning, which will aid the tutor to assess the progress you have made.

You will receive regular feedback from the tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. You will also talk to the tutor about your level of understanding and suitability for next steps.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a pen and notepad. It would be helpful, but not essential, to have read a primer to CBT such as Greenberger & Padesky, ‘Mind over Mood’ or Melanie Fennell’s ‘Overcoming Low Self-Esteem’.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
