What is the course about?

This course will deepen your understanding of the influential figures behind the theory. Solidify your grasp of the essential ideas that underpin the approach. Refine your counselling techniques through hands-on practice.

What will we cover?

The course will cover such topics as:

  • using a five-part model
  • activity monitoring and scheduling
  • cognitive restructuring
  • thinking traps
  • guided discovery and behavioural experiments

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • state three things that are distinctive about CBT as a form of counselling
  • name at least five key techniques
  • be able to use at least three CBT techniques.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is Intermediate level and is aimed at students who have little or no knowledge of CBT. It is also suitable for trainee and practising counsellors who want to know more about CBT. It is not a substitute for therapy itself, rather a general introduction to CBT.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be taught using the aid of presentations, lectures. handouts and case studies. It will also include discussions and work in small groups. You will also be asked to complete a written review of 1,500 words reflecting on your learning, which will aid the tutor to assess the progress you have made.

You will receive regular feedback from the tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. You will also talk to the tutor about your level of understanding and suitability for next steps.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a pen and notepad. It would be helpful, but not essential, to have read a primer to CBT such as Greenberger & Padesky, ‘Mind over Mood’ or Melanie Fennell’s ‘Overcoming Low Self-Esteem’.

For those who wish a certificate of attendance is available for a small charge by contacting student services.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
