What is the course about?
Explore how poetic representations of the creation and the principle of creativity have evolved over 3000 years. Trace these themes from scriptural texts, through Shakespeare, Milton, Romanticism and up to the present day.
Peter Brennan is a poet, and was for many years Head of English at The Latymer School, Edmonton. He founded Visionary Company courses in 2005, and is Editor-in-Chief of Perdika Press. Over the past ten years, Peter has taught more than 60 courses at City Lit.
What will we cover?
We shall consider the ways in which poets’ presentation of this theme has evolved over the centuries. After an initial consideration of various scriptural accounts, we shall read and discuss distinctive works by major English language poets representing the development of thought and feeling about creation and creativity across the last seven centuries. Throughout, we shall be concerned about the characteristics of their poetry as well as by the ideas that emerge from it.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Demonstrate understanding of many ways in which poets have evoked the creation and creativity in their works across the centuries.
Appreciate how poets – in treating this theme – reflect, interpret and extend the traditions, faiths and social contexts that have helped to form them.
Identify how poets’ styles and techniques can contribute to the meaning and impact of their poetry.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is an introductory course; no previous knowledge or study of religion is required, nor is any particular faith
commitment expected of students. Students of all faiths and worldviews (and none) are welcome.
You will need an enthusiasm for reading and discussing a wide range of poems, with very varied implications. You will be interested in listening to – and learning from – the responses of other students to the work discussed. You will have a commitment to developing your analytical skills, both spiritually and poetically.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Teacher explanation; group discussion.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
There are no other costs. You will be provided with copies of the poems to be studied. Please bring an open mind, respect for opinions different from your own, and paper and pen.
