What is the course about?

You will be introduced to calligraphy through a series of card making projects designed to provide a good working knowledge of calligraphy techniques. You will develop skills in both calligraphy and hand crafted cards enabling you to go on to experiment and design your own unique cards.

What will we cover?

  • how to write with different calligraphy tools 
  • how to make multi-folded cards how to write with ink and gouache 
  • how to write with masking fluid 
  • how to use a limited colour palette

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Write calligraphic scripts with a variety of calligraphy tools 
  • Make original hand made expandable greeting cards

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for the complete beginner or those who wish to refresh their calligraphy skills. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and you will be invited to take part in group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

During the class there will be group and individual demonstrations. You will be given examples and worksheets which enable you to develop at your own pace. It will be beneficial if you can do some practise between sessions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to purchase an A3 folder for handouts and worksheets, a pencil and a notebook. Materials needed to complete the projects are included in the cost of the course.

Sharon Shaw Tutor Website

Sharon is a London based left-handed calligrapher, lettering artist and illustrator. She studied Calligraphy and Bookbinding at Roehampton University and was awarded a first class honours degree in 2003. In 2010 she became a Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators. Sharon believes anyone can learn calligraphy if you relax, enjoy the process and allow yourself to make lots and lots and lots of mistakes.
