What is the course about?
This course is process focused – designed to help writers connect to their creativity in a low-pressure, accessible and enjoyable way. Using a combination of visualisation, breath and body work, we will tap into your energies and sensory perceptions to help inspire, unblock and embolden the writer within.

- Using the Four Elements (earth, water, fire and air) to create emotional intimacy with your characters and settings
- Ways to unlock creativity
- Ways to feel more inspired
- New ways to access your creativity
- Generating original writing from unusual perspectives
- Exploring sensory prompts to deepen description.
- Reflecting on your writing process to identify creative tools to take forward.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for beginner and established writers/ artists.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This course takes a non-judgemental approach to exploring a variety of methods and techniques to help you achieve your potential. You will learn through a combination of:
- Interactive tutor presentations
- Embodied writing practices
- Whole group discussions, group and pair work
- Individual guided writing activities, visualisations, breath-work and self-reflection
- Feedback from peers and your tutor
City Lit Writing endeavours to create a safe and welcoming space for all and we strongly support the use of content notes in our classes. This means that learners are encouraged to make their tutor and classmates aware in advance if any writing they wish to share contains material that may be deemed sensitive. Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
There are no additional costs. Please bring writing materials. Wear comfortable clothing in which you can move freely.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Beginners may be interested in taking a term-long course like Ways into creative writing or The 60 minute writer. Alternatively, for writers at all levels who would like to focus on a specific form of creative writing, we offer courses in short story writing, writing fiction, poetry, screenwriting, and more. Please feel free to contact the Writing department for advice on which course to take next!
All students are invited to join us at Late Lines, our regular performance night for City Lit writers. Students are also encouraged to submit their work to Between the Lines, our annual anthology of creative writing. Sharmila Chauhan is a screenwriter, playwright and prose writer, featured on The Brit List 2022. Her plays include: The Husbands, which toured nationally and completed its run at London’s Soho Theatre (Kali and Pentabus Theatre), Born Again/Purnajanam (Kali Theatre, Jan 2012) and 10 Women (Avignon Festival, France, 2014). She has had two short films produced and written two features. Most recently, her short film Oysters was commissioned by Film London (2016) and her feature Mother Land is currently being developed by Cinestan International and has been long-listed for the Sundance Writers’ Lab.
