What is the course about?

This course shows you how to make the most of your garden with limited gardening time. Learn how to create the atmosphere of a Mediterranean style garden with suitable plant selections for both in the ground and containers. Discover the design elements that make up this practical style, and apply your knowledge to your own designed plan.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

- Analysing the elements of Med. Style planting
- Understanding the horticultural requirements for a Med. Garden
- Recognising the different roles and forms of planting design
- Combining suitable plants for Med. Style
- Understanding how to layout a planting plan to scale
- Choosing suitable plants for container planting.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Draw a simple Mediterranean style planting plan to scale
- Create a mood board of Mediterranean style as your guide
- Research and develop a list of different suitable plants for your design
- Recognise how to select suitable/healthy plants
- Apply design techniques to create a Mediterranean style.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for beginners.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, online resources and health and safety information. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This course will be delivered online. You will be taught using Zoom for the live sessions with your tutor. You will receive an email 2.5hrs before your session starts with details of the live session link. Please be aware you will need to check your email address associated with your account within this window.
We use Google Classroom E-learning platform which will store all tasks, notes and resources. You will be sent an email with the necessary information and will need to login into your Google classroom before each sessions starts.
The course will include tutor presentation and class discussion. Student preparation and homework outside class times is strongly encouraged. To fully participate in this online class you will need:
- An email address
- A reliable internet connection
- A computer/laptop/tablet with a fully updated browser (preferably google chrome). Your device will need a microphone, and preferably a camera.
- A printer.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need several sheets of graph paper, A4, a pad of tracing paper or greaseproof paper, masking tape, a notebook, pencil, eraser and a long tape measure. A scale rule is also required although a printable one, and printable graph paper will be provided via the resources made available to you in Google Classroom.

Alison Worster

Alison Worster has a BA Hons degree in graphic arts and Diploma in Garden Design. Alison’s first career was in commercial design and illustration, with many diverse clients ranging from Natural History Museum, National Trust to Paperchase, John Lewis, and exhibitions of her own artworks. After managing a design studio Alison’s love of drawing nature and plants, and the importance of her own garden, led her to retrain in garden design, allowing her to combine her experience of colour, texture and layout with living plants and outside spaces. Within months of graduating Alison gained a gold medal for the Ideal Home Show ‘Reclaiming London’ garden and won an RHS competition to exhibit at the Chelsea Flower Show ‘Fresh Talent’. Alison now runs her own garden design business, and specialises in making the most of typical, small London spaces. Alison teaches both drawing and garden design and her main aim is to enthuse, demystify and inspire her students in either of her subjects.
