Do you want to write more expressively and understand in more detail what you are reading? One way to do this is to understand the meaning of grammar. How does the choice of grammar change the meaning of what you write? How can you use your grammar knowledge to better understand what you are reading? How can you use your grammar awareness to write richer, more interesting texts? This course will enable you improve your reading and writing by helping you understand key grammatical features and how you can use these to add authority to writing, change tone, add emphasis, make arguments more persuasive, change pace and make the information and ideas clearer.

What is the course about?

This course will help you improve your reading and writing by understanding how grammar works and what the meaning is of certain grammatical forms. You will learn how to use and identify the effects of different grammar so your writing becomes richer and more varied and you can read for meaning in a more skilled way. You will focus on how to use grammatical features to add authority to your writing, engage your readers, create emphasis, make your arguments more persuasive, and change the pace of your writing. You will practise your reading by identifying these features in factual and fictional texts.

You will read different types of texts and use these to learn how to use to grammar to:
• add authority
• engage the reader
• create emphasis
• persuade the reader of an argument or point of view
• structure an argument
• add extra information and detail
• write clearly
• change the pace.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

•read texts with care to identify different meanings and details
•use grammatical features to achieve the following:

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for students at E3-L1 level English. This means you can read and write short texts such as emails and can understand some newspaper articles but you want to add more complexity to your reading and writing. You will need to complete a pre-course assessment to make sure you are on the right course. Click on Start Assessment or attend a face-to-face assessment - contact 020 7492 2511/

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment. The tutor will help you discover rules and features of English. You will work on your own and with other students on different tasks so you are always practising important in-demand life and work skills such as problem-solving, decision-making, prioritising, negotiating, collaborating and independence. You will learn in a step by step manner so you can complete challenging tasks in enjoyable and relaxing ways. Your tutor will also work with you individually so you know how to improve and how to work in a way that improves your learning. You will need to do work outside the classroom and use Google Classroom to help you.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and a code for Google classroom so you can communicate with classmates and access materials, videos etc. online..
