What is the course about?

Procreate is a popular tool for illustrators, useful for all stages of the creative process, from sketching easy-to-edit roughs, to polishing an illustration. This course guides beginners through the foundational skills required to develop their illustration skills on the iPad. You will develop a Procreate illustration stage by stage throughout the course, discovering inspiring and helpful digital features along the way.

What will we cover?

• Managing image files
• Producing rough sketches and editing a drawing
• Choosing brushes and building a colour palette
• Lighting effects
• Finishing touches to artwork and illustrations.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Create and manage image files in Procreate
• Use drawing tools to sketch and edit rough illustrations
• Create and manage colour palettes in Procreate
• Select and use your chosen brushes to produce your desired textures and effects
• Demonstrate how layers can be used to create depth and atmosphere.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginner’s course and no previous experience of illustration or of using the iPad is required. Please note* that students should have their own iPad with Procreate installed, and ideally a stylus such as the Apple Pencil.

You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You will be encouraged to take short written notes for your own use and take part in group discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Students will each choose something they would like to illustrate as a portfolio piece, and together we will walk through the illustration process, stage by stage, with a clear task each week. We recommend that students practice their Procreate skills during the week and between each session.
Additional / extension tasks may be set for you to complete at home or outside of the course hours. Completion of additional tasks is encouraged to help you get the most out of the course. Where required your tutor will discuss these with you during each session.

This course is supported by Google Classroom as a Virtual Learning Environment. When you log on you will be able to access course material, presentations and handouts etc. and may be asked to complete learner progress records. You can find help via the student help centre on the Citylit website.

Please note it is important that you sign up and log in to your course Google classroom prior to the first session. Joining detail will be sent to you via email (check your junk/spam folder).

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Students should have their own iPad with Procreate installed, and a stylus such as the Apple Pencil. During the course you may wish to purchase additional digital brushes to use, but this is not essential as there are more than enough great brushes already offered inside Procreate.

Need art supplies? Our partner London Graphic Centre has everything you need from pencil to printing services, at 15% off.

To get 15% LGC discount, students will need to show proof/ confirmation of enrolment of them being a student at City Lit. You can apply in-store or by simply emailing with a scan or photo of relevant confirmation. The student discount does not apply to products that are already discounted or on offer. When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Students can progress to further courses in digital illustration, dive deeper into Procreate or try Photoshop and other Adobe CC applications. This course will also provide a good knowledge that students could carry forward into other illustration courses, such as Children’s Book Illustration.
