Victorian London shaped today's city. Discover the lasting legacy of the Victorian age, uncover its secrets, and meet some of the characters who created one of the world's greatest cities. NB. Initial lecture at City Lit.


What is the course about?

Introduction to Victorian London and its social, artistic, historical & political life.

What will we cover?

Kensington - Victoria and Albert museum and development of area
The City - Trade and Dickens
Westminster - Power and Politics
Pimlico - Tate Britain, social housing and development
The West End - Victorians at Play
Kings Cross/St. Pancras - Transport and Trade
East End - Slums and Crime.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

understand the impact of the Victorian age on London
identify key Victorian buildings
have a more detailed knowledge of nineteenth century history
have a more detailed knowledge of key figures, events and movements that shaped the Victorian age.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No particular skills required
The ability to do a two hour moderate walk each week.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

One class room based lecture, followed by a walk in a different part of London each week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No additional costs. Please bring pen and paper (or electronic equivalent).

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

One of the many London guided walks starting in September. Details can be found on the City Lit website.
