What is the course about?

The course encourages an inventive approach to composition and introduces you to the underlying abstract forces that occur in all visual exploration, including 'ways of seeing' and to develop a drawing language to articulate and understand visual relationships. Using a variety of drawing media and creative approaches, you will develop a dynamic approach to drawing and work with increasing independence.

What will we cover?

• Using a range of subject matter and sources as starting points.
• Exploring a variety of drawing approaches to develop an expressive, dynamic visual language.
• Generating research using a personal sketchbook and self-reflection.
• Developing a drawing from preparatory studies.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Engage with new approaches to develop a more expressive visual language and creative possibilities.
• Use a sketchbook to develop personal ideas.
• Explore the role of preparatory sketches and experimentation in making a sustained drawing.
• Demonstrate autonomy to develop a short drawing project.
• Maintain a critical awareness of the work of other artists and your own.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an intermediate course, ideal for those who have already some understanding of drawing in a studio environment or working from observation. Ideally you will already have completed Drawing 2 before enrolling on this course or similar experience.

You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You may be encouraged to take short written notes for your own use and take part in group discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

• Practical work in the studio
• Short demonstrations
• Handouts
• One-to–one tutoring
• Group discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic drawing materials and resources are provided as part of this course, including paper, pencils, charcoal. Students are welcome to bring any additional specialist materials.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Painting and Drawing Dialogues, Large-scale Drawing Projects, Drawing into Painting, advanced practice drawing courses or UAL Foundation Diploma in Art and Design.
