What is the course about?

This course is for intermediate level students with some drawing experience, who would like to explore experimental drawing techniques to develop their own ideas in drawing. Be inspired by experimental drawing processes and the work of contemporary artists. From initial sketches and additional research through to a series of final drawings, you will work from observation, personal research, and imagination.

What will we cover?

• Source material and development of subject matter e.g. sketchbook ideas, working from photographs and projections.
• Experimenting with image making materials i.e. drawing materials, mixing media and collage.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Draw with increased confidence using a variety of different methods.
• Use drawing as a means of recording, exploration, and self-expression.
• Use a sketchbook/photograph as a research tool for a drawing.
• Develop your initial visual ideas using a variety of drawing materials and processes.
• Make a sustained drawing or series of works.
• Make decisions about the development of your own work.
• Reflect on the work of artists working today and the influence on your own drawing practice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an intermediate course for students with drawing experience / completed our Drawing 1 course or an equivalent. Come with an open mind and a willingness to try things out and develop your work further.

You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You may be encouraged to take short written notes for your own use and take part in group discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

• Practical work in the studio.
• Short demonstrations
• Handouts
• One-to–one tutoring
• Group discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials and resources are provided as part of this course, including drawing media and paper.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You might want to consider further short-courses: Large-scale drawing and mixed-media, Large-scale sketchbook, or Drawing 3.

Alternatively you can apply for longer courses at City Lit that incorporate and extend drawing practice: UAL Foundation Diploma in Art and Design for those who want to progress to higher education or to prepare for work in the creative industries; City Lit Fine Art Course; Extended drawing for artists and makers for students that wish to develop their personal practice.
