Drawing and painting on your iPad

Learn how to use this fantastic tool, as used by the artist David Hockney, to create, develop and explore visual ideas in the practice of drawing and painting. You will need to bring your own iPad and a copy of the Brushes application.


What is the course about?

Through demonstration and simple practical exercises this course will provide an intensive and stimulating introduction to some of the possible uses of the versatile iPad . Our focus will be on the practice of painting and drawing as facilitated by the “Brushes redux” software.

What will we cover?

Traditional ideas such as line, gesture, tone and basic colour theory will be explored in the digital medium and the idea that the iPad can be used a digital sketch book.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Develop images imaginatively using line, tone, gesture, and simple colour in digital form
- Use images from the built in camera as a starting point for development
- Explore the potential of the iPad as a digital sketch book
- Use your iPad to explore, develop and create ideas from the imagination and from images taken with the built in camera.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No experience is necessary.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Concepts and ideas will be explained and demonstrated, students will be given practical exercises to complete and be encouraged to experiment both in class and at home.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You must bring your own iPad and the 'brushes redux' app and your finger or a stylus.

If you have brushes or procreate on your device but never get round to learning how it works or find the prospect daunting, this is a definite course for you.

This is a very helpful course over 3 days, covering ‘Brushes’ in depth, and introducing ‘Procreate’. Fun and instructive. With lots of individual help.

Very enjoyable and informative course which exceeded my expectations. The teacher is an entertaining tutor who really knows his stuff. I learned a great deal for a short course including a few surprising tips on using my iPad! Definitely a course to recommend.
