What is the course about?

The course will explore a variety of drawing and painting techniques and processes to develop your confidence in portrait painting to make a more contemporary response. Alongside traditional skills of how to structure and proportion the human face and how to mix skin tones, you will learn how to construct and compose a contemporary painting, using expression and imagination to produce a personal response.

What will we cover?

The course will explore a variety of techniques such as
Palette arrangement
Colour Mixing
Application of paint,
Understanding light and tone
Impasto paint (thick direct paint)
Composition including cropping
Notions of 'identity' in contemporary portraiture.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Successfully compose a portrait painting
- Mix oil paint more successfully
- Improve technical understanding of using oil paint
- Identify areas to improve on in your portraits.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for all levels but some drawing experience, particularly in life drawing would be an adavantage.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Optional homework will be set
- Group exercises
- Individual practical work
- Most tuition will be one to one tutorials
- Some demos and slide shows / short lectures will be included in the class.
