Explore the visual elements of drawing and mark-making though both quick and sustained studies. Learn to make and analyse drawn images, manipulate composition and structure to create dynamic, expressive, drawings.


What is the course about?

The course focuses on how visual elements function in altering the content and meaning of work, and how these can be deployed to control the mood and impact of an image. Talks and practical work combine to allow you to explore this in the drawings you make from observation.

- how to anticipate and control mood and impact of image
- visual tension - working with contrast and similarity
- meaning and visual structure.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- work with visual elements to alter the impact of your drawings.
- plan a composition to achieve desired level of visual tension
- choose appropriate medium and mark qualities for your drawings
- anticipate the response your drawing is likely to elicit
- explore the emotional content of your images.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for experienced students. It will not teach you how to draw but rather how to manipulate images through drawing. You should have already completed Drawing 2 or similar.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Presentations, talks, demonstrations, practical work, individual and group tutoring, and group discussion.
