An exciting new course that explores the relation between drawing and sculpture. Working with a range of materials and approaches, the course moves between sketching and abstract three-dimensional form, building techniques to create a series of experimental works.
Learning modes and locations may be different depending on the course start date. Please check the location of your chosen course and read our guide to learning modes and locations to help you choose the right course for you.
Please note: We offer a wide variety of financial support to make courses affordable. Just visit our online Help Centre for more information on a range of topics including fees, online learning and FAQs.
Suitable for beginners, the course oscillates between observational drawing and experimental abstract sculpture. Through a series of guided experimental processes, students will explore the relation between drawing and sculpting, using writing as a tool to reflect back. Although drawing, sculpture and writing each have their own function, it is fun to put them in conversation, and this course offers an opportunity for this. We play with parameters and restrictions in order to lead to unexpected outcomes, with plenty of opportunity for discussion, and independent work.
What will we cover?
• Testing the relationship between drawing and sculpture • Exploring the components of drawing - line, tone and mark-making • Investigating the components of sculpture - mass, gesture, scale, form and balance • Exploring writing as a tool to develop work
• The work of other artists’ and practitioners • Reflect on your own progress and learning
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Produce a series of drawings in pencil, charcoal and pastel.
• Produce small sculptural forms in wire, rope, cardboard, chicken wire and Modrock.
• Develop a set of rules to push an idea forward
• Open up dialogue between drawing, writing and sculpture • Test out a range of materials
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a course for beginners, no experience is necessary. Also suitable for artists, or self-directed creatives who would like to refresh their ideas. You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You may be encouraged to take short written notes for your own use and take part in group discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
• Practical work in the studio • Demonstrations • Presentations and handouts • Individual and group tutoring • Group discussion
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Isobel works across sculpture and text, an experimental and materials-led process where chance and contingency are at the fore. Through her practice she creates sculptural scenarios that playfully question the fleeting and ambiguous nature of interactions that take place in the physical realm. Isobel’s teaching and pedagogy often take collaborative form, and she holds a practice-led PhD from King’s College London and The Slade School of Fine Art, UCL. Alongside her individual practice, Isobel directs the icing room artist-run space.
