What is the course about?
Drawing geometric motifs and patterns based on natural forms: flowers, snowflakes, honeycomb, cacti, shells, webs, insects and feathers.
What will we cover?
- Correct use of tools: compasses, setsquares, rulers
- Symmetry in nature
- Study of the three primary symmetry groups which embody the triangle and hexagon, the square and octagon, the pentagon and decagon
- The Golden ratio
- The Fibonacci sequence and where it appears in nature
- Creating interlinked patterns.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Construct two-dimensional geometric shapes
- Use geometric shapes in the portrayal of natural forms
- Observe geometry in nature
- Create interlinked patterns using geometrical shapes.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a beginners’ course.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Homework will be set at the end of each class.

You will be taught using a range of techniques including workshops, short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, tutorials, group and individual assistance and hand-outs. Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in Animation, Cartooning, Digital arts, Film, Graphics, Illustration, Photography and Web design.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Good quality HB pencils, your own compass, ruler and set square would be useful

It would be useful to bring a memory stick (or portable hard drive – please note PC formatted hard drives can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to.)
