What is the course about?
Develop the playing skills and musicianship acquired in Drumming 1. Our focus is on building technical skills and stylistic authenticity when playing a range of contemporary grooves.
What will we cover?
- Four way coordination
- Fluency of mobility around the kit
- Study of contemporary styles, and classic grooves
- Practice at reading music for drums.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- improved stick control, rudimental technique, and apply this to the drumset
- Play different styles with the correct 'feel'
- Demonstrate improved 4-way coordination for drumming
- play in all common time signatures
- play together.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
For players who have successfully completed 3 terms of drum class. New students with a year of experience on kit are welcome also.
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Learning as a group, using 5 or 6 kits, practice kits and pads; tutor demonstration; listen to recorded samples; playing together, playing solo; learning grooves by ear and from notation. Mostly we will play as an ensemble, sometimes for a sustained period.

Please bring your own sticks and a device to record parts of your class. All course resources will be available also in the google classroom.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Progress to a further drumming course in the new academic year.
You should also be ready to join a band and start to rehearse!
Cerys Hogg is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and improviser. Whilst studying Fine Art, specialising in performance art and installation, she developed her musical skills through performing as a jazz vocalist, drummer and pianist. A scholarship allowed her to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama on the post-graduate Jazz and Studio Music course. Here she specialised in jazz voice developing a personal approach to improvisation, harmony and arranging. Currently Cerys is combining her work as both multimedia artist and musician. She performs in KOGG, an experimental electronic music duo with fellow City Lit tutor, Selena Kay. Together they create music by sampling vocals, sound objects, and home-made instruments, combining composed and improvised material. They have performed live and are in the process of creating an album. An experienced teacher with a PGCE from the Institute of Education, Cerys has a reputation for delivering entertaining and engaging classes. She has a drive to demystify the elements of music, making it an accessible and enjoyable experience for all.
