This course is for competent drummers who want to take their playing further and build confidence in your musical ability, in a supportive group environment. Learn to play a wide variety of musical styles - Rock, World Music, Jazz, Reggae and Funk, with confidence and authenticity.
What will we cover?
- Contemporary rock, jazz, funk, and world music styles - Maintaining a good practice routine - Developing coordinated independence to enable a solid technique - Improving stick control through a sound understanding and application of rudiments - Sight reading - Recording ourselves playing.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Develop and sustain a practice regime - apply rudimental technique to the drum set in a creative way - Play a wide range of different styles with the correct 'feel' - Play drum charts accurately - Have improved 4-way independence - play alone with confidence.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
For players who have completed drumming 4a & b and drummers with equivalent technical competence e.g. play paradiddles at 80bpm, establish a groove for rock, Latin, funk and swing.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Learning as a group, playing your electronic or acoustic kit, playing together and solo presentations Tutor demonstrations; recorded and youtube samples will support learning Playing by ear, and using notation of various kinds Learning grooves by ear and from notation Students are encouraged to create a forum to share knowledge, using the google classroom Please expect to dedicate time to practise between classes.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Sticks and brushes! Extensive learning resources will be available in the google classroom.
Known for his versatility, Matt Fisher is a sought-after drummer and percussionist based in London. Matt has performed and collaborated with some of the UK’s most prominent musicians such as Tina May, Jacqui Dankworth, Najma Akhtar, Nikki Illes, Steve Waterman, Anita Wardell and Christine Tobin. Working in a variety of styles from pop and rock, to jazz and orchestral, Matt has toured and performed around the world including India, USA, Morocco, Mexico and across Europe. Matt is endorsed by Kandu Percussion and Rohema drum sticks. As well as having a busy performing schedule, Matt is teacher of drum kit at St Paul’s School, Emanuel School, and is also an examiner for Trinity College London. Matt has contributed articles to the Modern Drummer Magazine (USA) and was a product reviewer for Rhythm Magazine (UK). Matt received a First Class Honours degree at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and completed his Masters degree in Jazz Performance at Trinity College of Music, London. Matt commenced teaching at City Lit in 2025.
