What is the course about?
This course is for competent drummers who want to take their playing further and build confidence in your musical ability, in a supportive group environment.
Learn to play a wide variety of musical styles - Rock, World Music, Jazz, Reggae and Funk, with confidence, flair and authenticity.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone can be used if you don't have a computer but please note the experience may be less optimal.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
- Contemporary rock, jazz, funk, and world music styles
- Maintaining a good practice routine
- Developing coordinated independence to enable a solid technique
- Improving stick control through a sound understanding and application of rudiments
- Tunes from the Rockschool grades 7 and 8 syllabus
- Sight reading
- Recording ourselves.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Develop and sustain a sound practice routine away from class
- apply rudimental technique to the drum set in a creative way
- Play a wide range of different styles with the correct 'feel'
- Play drum charts accurately
- Have improved 4-way independence.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
For players who have already studied at this level, and drummers with equivalent technical competence e.g. play paradiddles above 80bpm, establish a groove for rock, Latin, funk, reggae and swing.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Learning as a group, playing your electronic or acoustic kit, playing together and solo presentations
Tutor demonstrations; recorded and youtube samples will support learning
Playing by ear, and using notation of various kinds
Learning grooves by ear and from notation.
Students are encouraged to create a forum to share knowledge, to film examples in class, and to keep a record of their learning.
Please expect to dedicate time to practise between classes: there will be homework focusing on specific skills, and you should be prepared to devote time to general study of the instrument.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You'll need a full acoustic or electronic kit and a webcam you can arrange so you can be seen playing it in the sessions.
