What is the course about?

  • exploring type as a design element, as a narrative element and as an element of chance
  • experimenting with surface, shape and colour
  • developing technical skills
  • understanding the future possibilities for using type in combination with different printmaking techniques and images.

What will we cover?

  • using paper stencils to screen print with.
  • using colour, shape and composition
  • relief printing and embossing with wooden type
  • using type to create narrative


Please note that the wooden type you use in these sessions will be prepared/ lasercut beforehand.
We can talk through how one prepares files to do this in class but there is not the time to facilitate the process in this introductory course.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • print a silkscreen using paper stencils
  • ink and print wooden type
  • emboss paper using wooden type
  • use simple type to form and develop design ideas.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

All levels are welcome.
The course is suitable for beginner printmakers who have some drawing or design experience
and more seasoned printmakers who want to try out new ideas and extend their practice.
You should be able to follow verbal instructions and follow demonstrations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through practical demonstrations both to the group and to individuals. There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience therefore group discussions and feedback are encouraged.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic materials are provided.
It is recommended that you bring visual source material i.e. Texts you wish to use.
A note pad and a black permanent marker / sharpie are extremely useful.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

After this course you may want to consider trying one of the different silkscreen courses we offer, or printmaking and new media courses that include access to the lasercutter. Please ask your tutor for advice and details.
