English communication skills for life and work (ESOL entry 1)

This course is for beginners who only know a few words in English. You will learn new words, simple grammar, how to ask and answer questions, and how to talk and write about yourself, your family, and your friends. You will also learn how to fill in forms and write short emails.

 

You can join the course during terms 1,2 or 3.

What is the course about?

This course runs for one year in three parts. You can start in any term.

You will learn English for everyday life and work.

You will practise:

• speaking, listening, reading and writing

• asking and answering questions in present simple, present continuous and some past simple

• talking about daily life, family, and friends

• using simple adjectives to describe things and pictures

• listening for key information in short recordings

• writing short sentences, notes, messages, and emails

• using capital letters, full stops, and question marks

• reading simple texts, adverts, and forms

• learning basic vocabulary and spelling

What will we cover?

Each class will have a topic, such as:

• life in the UK

• daily routines

• health

• jobs

• shopping

• transport

• cultures

You will practise:

• asking and answering basic questions

• talking and writing about everyday life

• describing things using simple adjectives

• listening for key details

• writing short messages, emails and letters

• using correct punctuation (capital letters, question marks, full stops)

• reading for information in simple texts

• learning and spelling new words

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

· use English in everyday situations (shopping, travel, talking to friends or colleagues)

· ask and answer simple questions in present, past, and continuous tenses

· speak and write about home, family, and friends

· describe things and pictures

· listen and understand simple recordings

· write short messages, notes and emails

· use correct punctuation

· read basic texts and find information

· spell and use basic words correctly

· improve your digital skills (Google Classroom, internet, Microsoft Word)

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginner (Entry 1 / A1) course. It's for people with little or no English. You need to do a short assessment before joining

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a friendly and supportive class. You will practise speaking, listening, reading and writing in many ways – including games, pair work, small group work, videos, and class discussions.

You will also get help from your teacher one-to-one.

You will need to do homework every week and use Google Classroom.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring:

• a pen

• a lined A4 paper notepad or a notebook

• a folder for your work

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This course has three parts, and you will normally complete each part over three terms. After completing all three parts, you can move to ESOL Entry 2.
