English level 1 for Deaf people

This is a short but very intensive course which is mainly focused on preparing for English level 1 exams. There will be lots of mock exams and continuous feedback on reading, writing and communication (in BSL). It involves lots of homework, revision and regular feedback, and therefore requires requires a serious commitment to studying outside of the classroom hours.

To join this course you will need to have completed the following 3 courses first: 'English Grammar for deaf people', 'Reading and writing for deaf people', 'English level 1 prep for deaf people'.

What is the course about?

This is a short but very intensive course which is mainly focused on preparing for English level 1 exams. What will we cover?

Topics will include:
- identifying different text types
- identifying the main points from a text
- formal and informal language
- writing for different purposes and audiences etc.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- read and understand a variety of texts
- write longer texts using appropriate style and grammatically correct sentences
- plan and proofread writing etc.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught in a deaf-only group with a tutor that is fluent in British Sign Language. Teaching will be in a
supportive group setting, which involves pair and small group work. The interactive whiteboard and google classroom
will also help your learning. Handouts and worksheets will allow you to build up a folder of work. You will be given
homework on a regular basis and an opportunity for one to one tutorials with your tutor to address any individual
learning needs that you have.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

- Dictionary (intermediate and/or advanced)
- Bi-lingual dictionary if appropriate
- Organised course file/folder/paper/highlighter pens and any other relevant stationery.

At the end of the course, you will be given relevant information on which course(s) you can progress to.
