What is the course about?

This course helps you build the skills to write clearly and confidently for different purposes, including work, education, and everyday life. You will learn how to write formal and informal texts such as letters, emails, reports, articles, reviews, and instructions. You will develop your grammar, punctuation, spelling, and organisation to improve both accuracy and clarity. 

This course prepares you for the ESB Level 2 Writing exam, which requires you to produce two extended writing tasks and demonstrate accurate use of grammar, vocabulary, and structure. 

What will we cover?

You will explore real-life themes and learn how to write in different styles and for different audiences. Topics may include: 

  • Work and careers 

  • Education and lifelong learning 

  • Health and wellbeing 

  • Travel and local services 

  • Rights, responsibilities, and community life 

  • Environment and technology 

Writing skills include: 

  • Planning and structuring your writing 

  • Writing formal and informal letters, emails, reports, and articles 

  • Organising ideas into clear paragraphs with cohesion 

  • Using appropriate tone and style for different audiences 

  • Developing ideas clearly and logically 

  • Checking and correcting your own writing 

  • Improving spelling, punctuation, and sentence accuracy 

  • Using a range of tenses and grammar structures accurately

  • Write texts clearly, logically, and accurately for a variety of real-life purposes 

  • Use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling consistently 

  • Structure your writing with paragraphs and logical sequencing 

  • Choose appropriate tone, vocabulary, and formality for different audiences 

  • Plan, draft, and proofread your work independently 

  • Demonstrate the writing skills needed to pass the ESB Level 2 Writing exam 

  • Use writing effectively for work, education, and everyday communication 

You will also develop digital writing skills using: 

  • Google Docs or Microsoft Word 

  • Google Classroom 

  • Online tools for spelling, grammar, and proofreading 

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a Level 2 ESOL course. You should already be confident with writing at Level 1. You should be able to write structured short texts such as notes, simple letters, or emails, use a variety of sentence forms, spell common words correctly, use punctuation such as capital letters and full stops consistently. You must attend regularly and complete all class assignments to the tutor’s satisfaction to be entered for the exam. 

IMPORTANT: Please DO NOT travel or take holidays during the course unless it is an emergency. Regular attendance is required for exam entry and success on this course. 

The ESB Level 2 Writing exam will be held on Thursday 9th July 2026.

 

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a supportive and interactive classroom through: 

  • Model texts and guided writing tasks 

  • Grammar and vocabulary building 

  • Individual and group writing practice 

  • Tutor and peer feedback 

  • Step-by-step support to draft and improve your writing 

You will receive regular feedback and have opportunities to work on your writing outside of class. You are expected to complete weekly homework and use Google Classroom to access resources and submit assignments. 

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring: 

  • A pen 

  • A lined A4 notebook or notepad 

  • A folder for handouts and writing drafts 

Your tutor will provide: 

  • Writing guides and worksheets 

  • Model texts and exam-style tasks 

  • A code to join Google Classroom 

There are no extra costs for course materials. 

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This course has three parts. You usually complete one part each term. 

After passing this course and the ESB Level 2 Writing exam, you can: 

  • Complete the other Level 2 ESOL units (Speaking & Listening and/or Writing) 

  • Communication skills: developing your writing, speaking and digital skills through creating a radio programme (ESOL level 1-2) 

  • Learn English - discover London, its history, culture and people (level 1-level 2) 

  • ESOL and making podcasts: pronunciation, presentation, expression (level 1-2) 

  • Grammar in practice: advanced (level 2+) 

  • Progress to Functional Skills English Level 1 or 2 or GCSE English Language (You would need to be accessed to do a course in the English department) 

  • Join work-related courses such as CV and Cover Letter Writing or Job Search and Applications 

  • Apply for vocational or academic courses 

  • Improve your confidence in using written English for employment or further study 

  • Any suitable new year courses starting September 2026
