What is the course about?

This is the Writing unit of the ESOL course to give you confidence in writing and producing text independently for personal and academic writing, and for formal and informal texts. You will be taught how to generate creative and critical ideas using correct grammar, appropriate tenses, key linguistic features such as discourse markers, clauses, paragraphs, and you will become aware of the standard written features of English. You will focus on proof-reading, self-correction strategies and structuring your writing with correct conventions. You will also be taught how to organise, structure and extend your writing for academic, fiction, non-fiction and more complex text types or genres to suit purpose and audience.

What will we cover?

You will practise writing skills and if you pass your class assessments you will then prepare for the accredited writing exam. Each class will focus on a certain topic such as the news, technology & social media, the world – the UK and other countries, food and health, employment, community – local and global issues, education, consumerism, the arts & leisure time, and travel.
You will focus on:
• Planning and drafting writing
• Judging how much to write, and the level of detail to include
• Presenting information and ideas in a logical or persuasive sequence using paragraphs where appropriate
• Using format and structure to organise writing for different purposes
• Using formal and informal language appropriate to purpose and audience
• Using different styles of writing for different purposes (such as persuasive techniques, supporting evidence, technical vocabulary)
• Constructing complex sentences
• Using correct grammar (such as subject-verb agreement, correct and consistent use of tense)
• Using pronouns so that meaning is clear
• Punctuating sentences correctly and using punctuation accurately (such as commas, apostrophes, inverted commas)
• Spelling words correctly used most often in work, studies and daily life, including familiar technical words
• Proof-reading and revising writing for meaning and accuracy
• Producing legible text in a wide range of documents.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Write to communicate information, ideas and opinions for a wide range of contexts, audiences and purposes
• Write simple, compound and more complex sentences
• Adapt your writing effectively using the correct past, present and future tenses including simple, perfect, continuous, perfect continuous and conditional tenses
• Develop more academic and advanced vocabulary applying correct spelling features and strategies independently.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a Level 2 course; this course is ideal for you if you can write to communicate information, ideas and opinions clearly and effectively, using length, format and style appropriate to purpose, content and audience. You will need to attend regularly, complete and pass all in class assessments to be entered for the exam.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment with an emphasis on you discovering how to do and complete tasks, with guidance from the tutor. You will learn in a step-by-step manner so you can complete challenging tasks in enjoyable and relaxing ways. Your tutor will also work with you individually, so you know how to improve and how to work in a way that improves your learning. You will need to do work outside the classroom and use Google Classroom to help you.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a pen, a notebook and/or a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts, worksheets and live media materials such as journals, diaries and articles.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

If you have not got the qualification of the other 2 units, Reading and Speaking & Listening, you can progress onto these courses.
*If you have passed all 3 units of the Level 2 course, you will become a fully qualified ESOL learner that has gained the highest level of English for ESOL. You can now go on to study English Functional Skills or GCSE, a Level 2 Vocational or Academic course/programme. Before enrolling, you will be required to do an initial assessment for any Level 1 or 2 courses (or the equivalent) in the UK.
