What is the course about?

This course will help you become a more confident and skilful writer by identifying and applying language features that create meaning and style. You will explore how grammar can change the impact of your writing-adding authority, building drama, creating emphasis, or persuading your audience. You will develop concision, broaden your vocabulary, and increase your awareness of how different writing choices affect tone, clarity, and the reader’s response.

What will we cover?

· Using grammar to create meaning-adding authority, creating emphasis, building drama and tension, persuading and influencing the reader, and shifting between direct/indirect, formal/informal, polite/rude.

· Avoiding unnecessary repetition in writing.

· Changing rhythm, pace, and tone for effect.

· Creating vivid imagery through word choice and stylistic devices.

· Using metaphors, similes, and figurative language effectively.

· Expanding vocabulary for professional, academic, and creative contexts.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

· Use grammar deliberately to shape meaning and tone, including to add authority, create emphasis, build drama, or persuade.

· Shift style and register to suit professional, academic, and creative purposes.

· Avoid repetition and redundancy in your writing.

· Change rhythm, pace, and tone to engage the reader and control emphasis.

· Create vivid imagery through effective use of vocabulary, metaphors, and similes.

· Use precise and varied vocabulary to convey subtle shades of meaning.

· Edit and refine your work for clarity, flow, and reader impact.

· Structure paragraphs logically to guide the reader through your argument or narrative.

· Write with an awareness of audience expectations and adapt your style accordingly.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for advanced ESOL learners (Level 2 / C1 Advanced) who wish to strengthen their writing by using grammar creatively, expanding vocabulary, and developing a confident, expressive style. You should already be able to write clear, structured English for everyday and work-related purposes.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a friendly and supportive environment. The tutor will guide you to discover language rules and features through practical exercises, discussion, and analysis of authentic texts. You will work individually and collaboratively on writing tasks, building life and work skills such as problem-solving, decision-making, negotiating, and collaborating.

The course follows a step-by-step approach, making challenging tasks achievable and enjoyable. You will receive personalised feedback to help you improve your writing. Homework will be set, and you will use Google Classroom to access resources and share your work.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no additional course costs. Please have a pen, notebook or notepad and a folder to store your work and handouts.

Your tutor will provide all course materials and give you access to Google Classroom for online resources, videos, and communication with classmates.
