This course provides you with practical skills that enable you to explore and interpret a range of historical resources both online and in a research library. The course will include a class trip to the London Archives on 30 April @ 11am.

Providing students with the practical skills to enable the undertaking sustained research, engaging with resources both online and in a public archive. Please note that the class on 30th April will take place at 11.00 am offsite at the London Archives. All other classes will take place at 3pm.
What will we cover?
Each week there will be a pre-session activity, usually a chapter or exercise, which you are expected to complete before each class. While it is assumed that students have a research project in mind, it is not a necessary requirement. Help in choosing a topic to research while on this course will be provided. A list of the subjects covered is given below and discussion of your project is actively encouraged in order to personalise the information provided.

What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Define what is meant by the 5 W’s and why they are the historian’s best friends. • Be familiar with a range of internet resources and gain a critical eye when using them • Explain what kind of historical records are available to researchers and the sort of information they contain. • Apply for and obtain a History Card (no charge) to enable free access to a range of historical archives • Use an archive to access online sites free of charge such as Ancestry. Com.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
No prior knowledge required. However, a good standard of reading, writing and speaking English and a willingness to explore the internet safely is essential. This will be a highly interactive course and a willingness to share your views and share any research findings in a constructive and friendly environment from week to week is essential.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
PowerPoint will be used to illustrate key points and we will be reading and discussing contemporary sources. You will be encouraged to share your thoughts and ideas in a relaxed and friendly environment. There will be set readings for discussion each session.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
There are no other expenses other than note-taking materials. You are not expected to purchase any reading material. All essential reading will be supplied and stored in Google Classroom for you to download. A course book listing weekly topics and ideas for reading will be provided at the beginning of the course.
