English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Courses in London

Improve your English at City Lit. We have courses from beginner to advanced levels, with qualifications and without, in the day and in the evening.

All new students need to do an online assessment so we can put you in the right course. If you know which course you want to do, go to the course page on our website, and click 'Start Assessment'. You will need to enter your email address and create a password.

If you do not know which course you want to do, complete the online assessment featured on the Grammar in practice: upper intermediate level 1-2 page, we will then be able to advise you which course would be most suitable.

When you have completed your assessment, please email ian.wollington@citylit.ac.uk to let us know. Please put ‘ONLINE ASSESSMENT’ in the email subject line.

You can now study English with our online face-to-face courses. You will need a computer with a microphone, a camera and the internet. It is best to use Google Chrome as your web browser. Your tutor will send you information on how to join your online class after you have enrolled.

Please note: All our essential skills courses are FREE if you are in work and earn less than £20,962 a year. When you come for assessment or enrolment, bring a pay slip dated within 3 months of the course start date, or a current employment contract that shows your salary. The majority of English and maths courses are free for everyone while other courses have zero or reduced fees if you are on JSA, ESA (WRAG) or a means-tested benefit.   1. Communicating at work (level 1-2)

  2. ESOL pronunciation: stage 1 (level 1-2)

    Tired of people not understanding you? Would you like to sound 'more English'? Do you need to commununicate well with people in your work? Then this specialist course will help you. Learn how to make the individual sounds of English, hear the differences between them, and read and write the phonemic script, a special alphabet of sounds. This course is aimed at students with a good level of English - level 1 and 2 (B2-C1). Highly fluent students at level 3 or above should apply to the courses in the drama department.

    What are the different ways of pronouncing 'a'? Does 'for' always sound like 'four'? Is 't' always pronounced the same way? Learn the answers to these questions as you focus on fluent pronunciation practising linking, rhythm and stress and discover how context affects the pronunciation of English.   4. English for professionals: becoming fully proficient

    Are you a working in a professional setting and wanting to refine your English? Are you on a post-graduate course or completing a PhD and need some help to communicate at this level? This course will focus on some of the most challenging aspects of English proficiency in particular those areas of English for which there are no obvious rules or explanations. Why this word, not that? Why is this structure more appropriate than that one? We will look in particular at the effect of language, how it will be received and interpreted. This course is an excellent followw on from our C2 Proficiency course, but can also be done as a stand-alone course.

  5. ESOL and singing: sing your way to better English (entry 3 - level 2)

  6. ESOL and making podcasts: pronunciation, presentation, expression (level 1-2)

A podcast is a digital recording which can be used in a very practical way to help develop your English. On this course, you will discover how to make a podcast to record yourself, edit and upload your files as well as what to say and how to say it. You will be able to practise speaking on your own and interviewing others as well as learn how to prepare what to say and how to say it. Podcasting is a fantastic way of improving your pronunciation, your vocabulary, your spoken accuracy, and your fluency.

  7. Office skills for ESOL students (entry 3 - level 1)

    Would you like to work in an office? Not sure if your English or computing skills are good enough? Perhaps you already work in an office but want to improve your administration skills?
