Do you need to improve your English for work? Would you like to express yourself better? Have you got a passion you want to read about? Are you at the beginning of your journey in learning to read and write? Everyone can benefit from developing their literacy and expression - come and join us.

Whether you need help forming and sounding out letters or gaining a GCSE, we have a course for you. You can join classes which specifically improve your work English, focus on certain areas such as spelling, vocabulary or grammar or develop all your skills – reading, writing, speaking and listening. And you can choose whether you want a course with a qualification or not.

From English for Life to Functional Skills Level 2, our experienced and dynamic tutors will ensure you learn at the right level and pace with all the support you need.

  1. English for life (level 1)

    Do you want to become more confident in writing and speaking? Would you like to express yourself more effectively in difficult situations, in emails to friends, at work, when dealing with the council or your child's school? On this course, you will develop your reading and writings skills so you can act confidently in the most important everyday situations and be able to give your opinions and debate with others about a range of topics and events. You will work on how to organise your writing use paragraphs well and form different types of sentences. You will improve your vocabulary, discover new spelling strategies and learn how to use punctuation accurately. You will develop your reading skills to be able to find information and details, identify the purposes and summarise different types of texts. By the end of this three-term programme, you will be a competent reader and writer both at work and home and ready to do exams such as Functional Skills.

    Do you need help with reading and writing English? Can you write the letters of the alphabet or do you need to practise? Do you need to improve your spelling?   6. Develop your reading and writing (part 1): phonics and spelling (Entry level)

This course will help you use phonics to develop your English.   8. Develop your writing: through grammar (level 1-2)

    Occasionally you can cook a delicious meal just by accident. But most good cooks will create great tasting meals by knowing the ingredients well. It’s the same with writing. This course will enable you to create fantastic pieces of writing by helping you get to know key grammatical features and how you can use these to: add authority to your writing, alter its tone, make your arguments more persuasive, add emphasis, change pace and tension, make the information and ideas more concise and clearer, and create rich descriptions. By the end of the course you will be much more aware of how to use grammatical knowledge to write well whether at work, in your studies or your life in general. You will have improved your writing through grammar.

  9. Develop your reading and writing for the workplace and beyond: analysing, comparing and critically evaluating (Level 2)

    Do you have to read and process a lot of information at work? How do you compare the usefulness or relevance of different pieces of writing? How do you decide one text is better or more reliable than another? How do you judge the quality of a piece of writing whether your own or someone else's? What techniques does a writer use to convince you of a point of view? Are you reading ‘fake news’? This course will help you analyse, compare and evaluate different texts both inside and outside work. You will practise distinguishing implicit and explicit information and meaning, learn how to read multiple texts on paper or online to identify, select and process relevant information or ideas, how to identify different ways in which writers influence the reader and you will focus on how to decide on the quality of different pieces of writing. This course is ideal if you are wanting to do an English GCSE or Level 2 Functional Skills course but do not have the time for a full qualification.

  10. Develop your writing for the workplace and beyond: tone, register, style (Level 2)
