Essential Skills Courses at City Lit

Do you want to develop your English, ESOL, Maths or Digital Skills? Do you need to improve these skills to make progress at work, express yourself fully and participate in modern life? Whether English is your first or second language, you haven’t studied maths since school or you need to become confident on the computer, we can help you.

You can study on a wide range of courses from beginner to advanced and learn all the skills you need to do well at work, communicate effectively and become an active citizen. All our classes are taught by highly qualified tutors passionate about their subject.

Most of our courses are FREE if you are on a low income or claiming benefits. You will also usually need to do a pre-course assessment.

The majority of our ESOL, English, maths and digital skills classes are now live online. You will need a computer with a microphone, a camera and the internet. It is best to use Google Chrome.

    Are you now a confident speaker and writer of English? Can you communicate quite easily in your daily life, understand people around you, and read and write about everyday subjects? This intermediate course will help you speak, read and write about more complicated topics with greater accuracy. You will learn how to make a presentation, write formally and informally, and read about more challenging and interesting subjects. There will be a speaking and listening exam in February.

    You have a good level of competency in all areas of your English. You can express yourself accurately in speaking and writing, can read newspapers and understand most television and radio. This upper-intermediate to advanced course will enrich your vocabulary and expression in both formal and informal English, enhance your grammar, and prepare you fully for the demands of work and study in the UK. There will be a speaking and listening exam in February.

    Do you need proof of your ability to use English to study at graduate level or to work in a professional environment? Do you want to show yourself that you have reached a high level of competency in your new language?   7. Prepare for IELTS and improve your academic writing

    Do you need to improve your academic writing for university? Do you need proof of your English level to study at university or for professional purposes? This course will help you develop your essay writing and prepare for the IELTS Academic test, which is recognised as evidence of proficiency in English by more than 10,000 education and training providers worldwide. The IELTS Academic test is suitable for entry to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, and also for professional registration purposes. It assesses whether you are ready to begin studying or training in an environment where English language is used, and reflects some of the features of language used in academic study.
