Essential Skills Courses at City Lit

We offer courses in ESOL, English, maths and digital skills. You can improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing and your computing and digital skills. We run courses from beginner to advanced – for those who can write only a few words to those who are going to university, for those who are new to computing to those ready for ECDL level 3.

You need to have an initial online assessment before joining an English, maths or ESOL course. Please go to the course page you would like to enrol on and click 'Start Assessment'. We advise you to use Google Chrome as your browser when doing this.

On this beginners' course, you will learn new words and grammar, how to ask and answer questions, how to read and write about yourself, your family, and friends, and how to complete forms and short emails.   5. Maths for life (level 1)

    Become more confident using maths in your everyday life. This course will help you understand and use maths in your daily life so that data, graphs, charts and other mathematical representations come alive. You will begin to see how mathematics is everywhere and you will develop the maths you need to participate, make progress and express yourself in a modern society, without the pressure of an exam. You will work with whole numbers, recognise the relationship between fractions and decimal numbers and work with percentages. You will work on problem-solving involving time, money and measurements, as well as be able to measure confidently and convert between units of measurement. You will be able to state properties of shapes, both 2D and 3D and be better able to interpret, discuss and comment on the graphs you see in newspapers and online.

  7. English and maths for life (pre-entry)

  9. Getting Ready for Maths functional skills (level 1)
