Skills for Life

Develop the skills you need to participate fully in modern life, make progress at work and express yourself with confidence.

Whether you are a cleaner or a junior manager, office or construction worker, beginner or advanced level, our courses will help you develop the most in-demand workplace skills and at same time improve your general communication, English, ESOL, Data Literacy, Maths and Digital Skills. Our courses will also improve your skills and competences for life outside work from going to the doctors and filling out forms to talking about politics and discussing art.

Inside and outside work, in all types of jobs, at all levels, adults need to be problem-solvers, analysers, decision-makers, team-players, to see the bigger picture and be detail-oriented. Join our courses, online or face-to-face, and develop these universal essentials skills with our motivating, innovative and professional tutors.

  1. Getting Ready for Maths functional skills level 2

    Do you want to develop your mathematical skills and knowledge to solve problems and make decisions? The Functional Skills Level 2 Maths qualification shows employers and others that your maths skills are at a good level and that you can use these to solving complex problems in a variety of situations.This introductory course will make sure you know what to expect from, and are ready to start, the full accredited course. You must pass this course before you can join the qualification course.



    (Assessments including mock tests will take place in the City Lit building and you need to be able to attend these in person as required).

  4. Professional communication skills: effective written communication in the workplace (level 2)

    Are you aware of how your written communication skills impact readers? Do your emails, texts, tweets and reports achieve what you want them to? High level literacy skills are essential to most job roles. On this course you will explore why written communication is so important as well as how you can develop these skills. You will focus on how to adapt your writing to different audiences, for different purposes and with different levels of formality. You will practise various types of writing, including emails and reports as well as social media communications including tweets, LinkedIn and Facebook posts. By the end of the course you will not only be more skilled in choosing the right words but also writing in different styles depending on who and why you are writing.

  5. Becoming confident in algebra: problem-solving with equations (level 1-2)

    What is algebra is? Why is it useful? For many of us, algebra is something that we encountered at school, didn't really understand or see the point of. Yet we actually all use algebra quite frequently in our everyday lives without realising because we need it to solve problems. Problems such as how much money we need to buy groceries, how many bags we need to carry the groceries and how much space we need to put the groceries in at home!



    This course will help you see the value and usefulness of algebra and how you can use it in your personal and work life to make calculations easier and to see patterns. You will start with easier calculations and problems so you understand how algebra works before moving on to more complex uses.
