Essential Skills Courses at City Lit

Do you want to develop your English, ESOL, Maths or Digital Skills? Do you need to improve these skills to make progress at work, express yourself fully and participate in modern life? Whether English is your first or second language, you haven’t studied maths since school or you need to become confident on the computer, we can help you.

You can study on a wide range of courses from beginner to advanced and learn all the skills you need to do well at work, communicate effectively and become an active citizen. All our classes are taught by highly qualified tutors passionate about their subject.

Most of our courses are FREE if you are on a low income or claiming benefits. You will also usually need to do a pre-course assessment.

The majority of our ESOL, English, maths and digital skills classes are now live online. You will need a computer with a microphone, a camera and the internet. It is best to use Google Chrome.

  2. English for professionals: communicating, selling, negotiating and managing in business and work (Level 2)

    Do you want to work in business but lack the confidence? Do you already have a job but feel that your language skills are holding you back? This course will help you improve your business and work English so you can approach negotiations, meetings, presentations and workplace communication with confidence. You will focus on the skills that are most frequently called for in London job advertisements including: written and verbal communication, sales, influencing and negotiating, problem-solving and leadership.



    Aimed at second language speakers of English with a high level of competence (level 2) in the language.

    Learning how to write well requires learning how to read well. This course will prepare you for all types of writing but especially essay writing. Learn and practise how to answer essay questions by choosing what to read, how to read it and make notes, and then turning these notes into good pieces of writing with effective introductions and conclusions and well argued opinions. This course will be especially suitable for anyone wanting to study or who works in a job which requires good writing.

  4. English for professionals: becoming fully proficient

    Are you a working in a professional setting and wanting to refine your English? Are you on a post-graduate course or completing a PhD and need some help to communicate at this level? This course will focus on some of the most challenging aspects of English proficiency in particular those areas of English for which there are no obvious rules or explanations. Why this word, not that? Why is this structure more appropriate than that one? We will look in particular at the effect of language, how it will be received and interpreted. This course is an excellent follow on from our C2 Proficiency course, but can also be done as a stand-alone course.

This course will develop the skills and language you need for the workplace so you can present ideas, persuade and influence colleagues to support these ideas, write them up in reports and also explain your opinions and describe facts. You will develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing and become a confident communicator in the workplace.

  6. Advanced writing skills: how to write creatively and expressively (level 2)

    Do you want and need to do more than write workplace emails and information-based texts? Are you ready to develop your ability to create images with words, affect the reader's imagination, and express complex ideas and themes. Creativity and expression are essential to all good writing, including emails. This course will develop your capacity to do this by reading short pieces of English literature and analysing how different these are created, how different techniques, language features and grammar are used to convey moods, emotions, atmosphere, humour, characters and images. You will be set tasks such as writing a blog or portfolio, which the teacher will help you with, that require you to use and develop what you have learned from the class analyses to create expressive and meaningful pieces of writing.
