Essential Skills Courses at City Lit

Do you want to develop your English, ESOL, Maths or Digital Skills? Do you need to improve these skills to make progress at work, express yourself fully and participate in modern life? Whether English is your first or second language, you haven’t studied maths since school or you need to become confident on the computer, we can help you.

You can study on a wide range of courses from beginner to advanced and learn all the skills you need to do well at work, communicate effectively and become an active citizen. All our classes are taught by highly qualified tutors passionate about their subject.

Most of our courses are FREE if you are on a low income or claiming benefits. You will also usually need to do a pre-course assessment.

  2. Maths for life (entry 3)

    Do you need to become more confident in maths in your daily life, whether making calculations with money, understanding figures, charts and graphs in newspapers or online or measuring areas? This course will help you with the essential maths you need to participate, make progress and express yourself in society today. You will work with whole numbers, fractions and decimal numbers and use maths to solve problems involving time, money and measurement. You will learn about the properties of shapes, both 2D and 3D and how to read, interpret and comment on information in tables and charts. By the end of the course, you will be much more aware of how much maths there is in everyday life and how maths can help you.

    Do you want to improve your communication skills and become a more confident speaker, listener, reader and writer of English? On this course, you will develop all your English language skills so you can act confidently in the most important everyday situations inside and outside work. You will become a skilled communicator when writing, using digital resources and in face-to-face interactions. You will develop your active listening skills so you can understand and empathise better. You will work on how to express yourself when speaking in different situations. And you will practise your reading so you can see the whole picture and the details, make effective decisions about what you read, and prioritise matters. By the end of this three-term programme, you will be a competent speaker, listener, reader and writer both at work and home and ready to do exams such as Functional Skills.

    Do you want to improve your English reading and writing so that you can express yourself confidently and do the most important and common everyday tasks? Join this course and develop your reading and writing, while also talking about your own life events and key issues such as news stories, public figures, health and culture. You will learn how to read and write paragraphs and short texts about topics that interest you and important events. You will practise filling in forms, writing formal and informal letters and emails and you will improve your spelling, vocabulary and use of punctuation. You will also become more confident in expressing your thoughts and feelings and dealing with difficult situations, for example, at work or in your personal life.

    Become more confident in using maths to solve problems, analyse issues and make decisions at work or in everyday life. This course will make maths come alive. You will see how mathematics is everywhere and you will develop the maths you need to participate, make progress and express yourself in today's society. You will work with whole numbers, fractions, decimal numbers and percentages and recognise the relationships between them. You will work on problem-solving involving time, money and measurements, as well learn how to measure confidently and convert between units of measurement. You will be able to state properties of shapes, both 2D and 3D and be better able to interpret, discuss and comment on the graphs, charts and tables you see in newspapers, on the internet and at work.

Can you use numbers and count up to 100 or do you need help? On this course we will help you with your English and maths.     Do you want to improve your reading and writing of English and develop your communication skills? Would you like to practise your computer and digital skills at the same time? And work on your maths? In this class you will develop all of these skills so you can express yourself confidently when talking, writing and using the computer. You will learn how to read and write full sentences in English about important events and topics that interest you, how to fill in forms on paper and on the computer, how to understand and write important letters and emails land make appointments. You will become confident in your spelling, vocabulary, using capital letters, full stops and expressing your thoughts and feelings. You will practise searching for information on the Internet. And you will learn the maths you need for everyday life such as adding up your shopping costs and calculating your weekly budget.This course will help you learn all the most important skills you need in life.

    Learning how to write well requires learning how to read well. This course will prepare you for all types of writing but especially essay writing.
