Essential Skills Courses at City Lit

Do you want to develop your English, ESOL, Maths or Digital Skills? Do you need to improve these skills to make progress at work, express yourself fully and participate in modern life? Whether English is your first or second language, you haven’t studied maths since school or you need to become confident on the computer, we can help you.

You can study on a wide range of courses from beginner to advanced and learn all the skills you need to do well at work, communicate effectively and become an active citizen. All our classes are taught by highly qualified tutors passionate about their subject.

Most of our courses are FREE if you are on a low income or claiming benefits. You will also usually need to do a pre-course assessment.

    Are you excited by the English language? Do you want to engage with fiction and non-fiction? Do you need to improve your writing and critical thinking across a range of topics and themes? An English Language GCSE is an essential qualification for anyone wanting to practise higher-order reading skills and use these to develop fluent and effective writing. It is one of the most commonly required qualifications by employers and universities, and will enhance your job and education prospects. This specification will ensure that you can read fluently and write effectively, demonstrate a confident control of Standard English and write grammatically correct sentences, deploying figurative language, and analyse texts.

  2. Maths foundation GCSE

    Are you excited by the language of Maths? Do you want to understand how numbers, symbols and formulas enable us to identify and solve problems as well as find patterns and structure in the world. This course will extend your analytical and problem-solving skills and help you develop logic to plan and manage activities. A Maths GCSE is one of the most commonly required qualifications by employers and universities and by achieving it you will enhance your job and education prospects. Please note the Friday classes are not every Friday, but approximately every third week..



    You MUST have passed the Maths GCSE (Introduction) course (see website) and completed a pre-course assessment before being accepted onto this GCSE course.     Do you want to develop your English skills and gain a qualification? Do you need to show employers you have a good level of reading and writing and can speak well in a variety of situations. A level 2 functional skills qualification is equivalent to a GCSE and often required by employers. The course will develop your analytical skills, ensure you are confident in the most essential areas of literacy, and you will come to appreciate the variety and richness of English language use. You must have passed the Getting Ready for English Functional Skills (level 2) course before you do this Functional Skills qualification. You will need to do an initial pre-course assessment.   5. Develop your writing and reading: by using grammar (entry 3-level 1)

    Do you want to write more expressively and understand in more detail what you are reading? One way to do this is to understand the meaning of grammar. How does the choice of grammar change the meaning of what you write? How can you use your grammar knowledge to better understand what you are reading? How can you use your grammar awareness to write richer, more interesting texts? This course will enable you improve your reading and writing by helping you understand key grammatical features and how you can use these to add authority to writing, change tone, add emphasis, make arguments more persuasive, change pace and make the information and ideas clearer.

  6. Skills in English: developing your English for the workplace (entry 3-level 1)
    Course start date:  Thu 27 Jan 2022

    Do you need to improve your English so you can work in an office or be self-employed? Would you like to be an administrator but want to develop your email writing, speed of reading, your spelling and your punctuation? This course will improve all your communication skills so you can feel confident at work You will work on how to speak well when working with the public or other clients, how to show empath and respond calmly to difficult situations. You will practise how best to write emails and messages, how to organise them, use paragraphs and write good introductions and conclusions. You will develop your sentences using appropriate grammar and vocabulary, plus correct spelling and punctuation. Throughout the course, you will work on your reading so you can understand the overall meaning of work-based texts, see the bigger picture, find details and specific information, and make decisions based on your reading. By the end of the course you will have the range of expression and accuracy in English to work with confidence.

  7. Maths for Life (level 1-2)

    Become more confident in using maths to solve problems, analyse issues and make decisions at work or in everyday life. This course will make maths come alive. You will see how mathematics is everywhere and you will develop the maths you need to participate, make progress and express yourself in today's society. You will work with whole numbers, fractions, decimal numbers and percentages and recognise the relationships between them. You will work on problem-solving involving time, money and measurements, and convert between units of measurement. You will be able to state properties of shapes, both 2D and 3D and be better able to interpret, discuss and comment on the graphs, charts and tables you see in newspapers, on the internet and at work. You will be introduced to algebra and how it helps with setting up and solving problems

  9. Skills in English: how to express yourself on social media - with digital skills (entry 3-level 1)
    Course start date:  Thu 5 May 2022

    Location on this date:  KS - Keeley Street

    Communicating via text, Twitter, Instagram, blogs and vlogs is now as essential as emailing, phoning and speaking face-to-face. This course will help you develop the type of English you need, spoken and written, for these different media as well as help you with your general English. You will learn how to set up and use Twitter and Instagram accounts and you will practise how to write and speak directly and to the point so you get your message across with few words but in a polite manner. You will learn about the best ways to express yourself, developing your vocabulary and ways of emphasising your speech and writing. By doing this you will learn about parts of speech (verbs, nouns, etc.) and will be apply your skills and knowledge to other types of communication. You will also work on longer communications via blogs and vlogs so you will work on planning and drafting what you want to write or say, organising your communication and knowing how to begin and end.
