A practical course that examines major themes in abstract painting, including colour, space, gesture and concept. Learn how to develop your own abstract images, explore different painting techniques, and begin to make connections with the key ideas that have shaped abstract painting.


What is the course about?

This course will guide you through different pathways into abstract painting, including drawing, music and experimental processes. You will work through a series of projects that develop your ability to create balanced and inventive abstract compositions. Each project will reference key ideas in abstract painting, revealing insights that can be used to explore and extend your personal approach.

What will we cover?

Different methods of arriving at abstraction, including drawing, music and random acts
Composition - exploring visual form and space
Colour-mixing, colour-interactions, expressive use of colour
Paint handling - developing an engaging surface
Artists and ideas that have shaped abstract painting.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Use a range of starting points to open up personal abstract imagery
Select the pictorial and material means with which to develop your ideas
Identify different types of pictorial space and make use of these in project work
Demonstrate confident and sensitive use of colour and mark
Identify and reference key approaches to abstract painting
Develop confidence in the use of general painting terms to discuss your work.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for anyone with an open mind and/or some basic drawing or painting skills.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Practical projects, demonstrations, individual guidance and feedback, group discussion and examination of artists' work, possibly including a gallery visit.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

An A4 sketchbook is recommended for colour research and development.
