What is the course about?

You will be studying the lighting, composition and narrative of old master works, both painted and photographic. We will then create our own images in a modern contemporary style that pays homage to these past works of art. You will learn about posing, creating atmosphere with lighting, and you will be given guidance on editing your digital images in a painterly style.

As a team you will work together to source and use props and clothing that will enhance your image.

What will we cover?

- Light quality and direction
- Studio lighting techniques
- Composition using colour, texture and shadows
- Discussion and guidance on painterly style editing
- Art directing people and using props
- Using manual exposure and studio lighting.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Apply manual exposure settings with studio lighting
- Analyse light quality and light direction in an image and apply the approach to your own work using modern-day studio lighting.
- Explore narrative and symbolic characteristics of the old masters.
- Direct people and use props effectively
- Use paintings and photographs as a reference point for composing and art directing your own photographs.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an intermediate course . You will be expected to have knowledge of the manual exposure controls of the camera. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group activities and discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught using a range of techniques including demonstrations, small group practical exercises, group and individual assistance, hand-outs and image crit.
