What is the course about?
In this lecture we will see how the political and economic factors have contributed to the flourishing of the arts and philosophy in Florence.
What will we cover?
We will look at the creation of Florence as the city state; the importance of the Medici family as patrons of prominent artists and the great art developments such as the invention of perspective and the importance of the notion of ideas of beauty in painting and sculpture.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Have an understanding of the main factors that have made Florence so important in the Renaissance.
- Have an overview of the main artists that contributed to the creation of the use of perspective in painting
- Look and appreciate the significance of the notion of beauty in Renaissance Florence by looking at paintings and scultpures.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This lecture will be conducted in Italian and is therefore aimed at those of you with an advanced level of the language. It is suitable if you are attending Italian 4 or 5 at Citylit or have an equivalent level. If you're unsure, please email Italian@citylit.ac.uk
The seminar will focus on content knowledge instead of language skills, which means that your level of Italian should be advanced but not necessarily native-like. The course will offer advanced language learners both an opportunity to develop their knowledge about a topic and a chance to expand their vocabulary related to it. For native language speakers, the course will allow them to delve into a topic of their interest and learn more about it.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
No other cost. Students will just need to bring a pen and paper.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Francesco has taught Italian language classes and literature at City Lit since 2014. He also works as Head of the Classics Department. After graduating with honours in Modern Languages and Literatures (English, German and Serbo-Croat), he moved to London and started teaching Italian at various adult education colleges, which gave him the opportunity to share his interest in Italian language, culture and traditions to a diverse range of students. During this time, he also acquired experience in curriculum management. Francesco currently prepares students for Italian exams. His passion includes philology, Dante, early Italian literature and the history of Italy (primarily the Northeast, where he grew up and was educated).
