What is the course about?

Move beyond the basic Flamenco steps that you mastered in the beginners classes. This friendly and intensive class is accompanied by live Flamenco guitar and you will learn more complex steps, combinations and dances with adaptations and refinements appropriate to your level.

What will we cover?

Physical warm-up / cool-down
Flamenco posture and style
Footwork combinations
Co-ordination of arms / feet / head / wrists / forward turns / back turns
Development of stamina
Tuning into Flamenco music with palmas - rhythmic hand-clapping
Choreography and complete dances
Revision of dances previously learnt

There will be end of term presentations and public performance opportunities.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Consistently embody Flamenco dance posture and style with ease and panache
Accurately demonstrate a selection of elementary level footwork combinations
Accurately demonstrate co-ordination of arms / feet / head / wrists
Demonstrate back turns and forward turns combined with a variety of arm positions
Accurately and confidently distinguish the compas of a variety of Flamenco palos and demonstrate this by accompanying the music and dance with appropriate complex palmas
Perform a selection of elementary level choreographies and dances.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need to have danced Flamenco for at least a year (having completed our beginner's classes or equivalent). Suitable for students with up to six years worth of class experience.

In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions.
• Use numbers to recognise musical phrasing within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In this practical and dynamic class, students will be taught Flamenco dance through explanation, demonstration, copying, repetition, revision and practising to live and recorded Flamenco music. Through whole group work / small groups / pair work in class to consolidate learning. Through support in taking notes, so as to record learning and to enable students to practise / revise steps between classes (optional). Through hand-out / copies of written material to support practical learning via practise videos, audio files and links to YouTube clips which are all available on the online learning platform Google Classroom.

There will be optional visits to see recommended Flamenco performances in the London area and viewing of Flamenco videos / DVDs in class / at home.

HEALTH CHECK
You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Notebook (optional). The tutor will provide information on shops / websites where you can get the appropriate Flamenco dance accessories:

Women: Flamenco dance shoes, leotards / T-shirts recommended - NO baggy sweatshirts, jeans etc. Flamenco skirt.

Men: Flamenco dance boots; waistcoat.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Continue with Flamenco improver and intermediate and learn a new dance sequence.

VOICE & SPEECH: Having trained at LAMDA (1981-1984) and having worked in all media (radio, TV, theatre, film) for over 40 years, Danielle has taught the Voice module of ‘CL Foundation Acting’ course since 1995. She continues this with as much enthusiasm as ever, and also teaches First Folio Shakespeare, Technical Voice, Communication Skills, English Pronunciation and Vocal Anatomy. FLAMENCO: Danielle trained in Classical Ballet, Tap and Jive, and was drawn to flamenco with all itsexpressive power. She has taught Flamenco at CL since 1999, and her company Flamenco Con Gusto offers both novice and experienced dancers the chance to perform alongside her in public while supported by seasoned professional flamenco guitarists and singers. DIRECTING: Danielle has written, directed and choreographed ‘Flamenco Musical Dramas’: integrating actors’ performances with Flamenco dance, music & song. Such productions include • LA MANADA (WAF May 2019) City Lit Theatre Company’s adaptations of Lorca’s plays: • SPIRITS WITHIN (aka The House of Bernarda Alba', July 2013 and July 2023) • YERMA FLAMENCA (Spring 2020) and a project combining Shakespeare and Flamenco ROMERA Y JULIETA (June 24)
