What is the course about?
Embodying the rhythms of more complex Flamenco ‘palos’ (Flamenco ‘forms’ such as Bulerias, Tientos & Seguirillas), and dancing with real ‘Flamencura’ that magic that happens when strong technical skill combines with true, uninhibited expression. This course also offers many performance opportunities in and out of the classroom.

Co-ordination of arms / feet / head / wrists / forward turns / back turns
Tuning into Flamenco music with palmas - rhythmic hand-clapping

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Consistently embody Flamenco dance posture and style with ease and panache
Accurately demonstrate a selection of intermediate level footwork combinations
Accurately demonstrate co-ordination of arms / feet / head / wrists
Demonstrate back turns and forward turns combined with a variety of arm positions
Accurately and confidently distinguish the compas of a variety of Flamenco palos and demonstrate this by accompanying the music and dance with appropriate complex palmas
Describe the multi-cultural origins of Flamenco
Perform an Intermediate level choreography / dance.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is an intermediate course suitable for anyone with a minimum of 2 years / 120 hrs of Flamenco dance experience alternatively to anyone with up to 6 years of Flamenco dance experience who wants to re-enforce their skills, learn new choreographies and gain performance experience.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions
• Use numbers to recognise rhythms within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
In this practical and dynamic class, students will be taught Flamenco dance through explanation, demonstration, copying, repetition, revision and practising to live and recorded Flamenco music. We will work as a whole group, work in small groups and in pairs to consolidate learning. Note taking is recommended as is recording sections of our work & choreographies for home study / practise. Hand-outs are provided to support practical learning. There will also be optional visits to see recommended Flamenco performances in the London area and viewing of Flamenco videos / DVDs inn class / at home.
You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.
As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You will be expected to wear flamenco shoes (Flamenco boots for men) and have a skirt (women) or waistcoat (men).
Leotards / T-shirts recommended. No baggy sweatshirts, jeans etc. A ‘Cordoba’ hat will be used in the Tientos choreography (the tutor can lend some out and also recommend where a hat can be bought.).
