What is the course about?
This course explores ‘extended’ flute techniques that have developed since 1900, including sounds used in jazz, rock (e.g. Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull) and classical music (e.g. Ian Clarke, Robert Dick). It is a practical course in which you will be able to try out the techniques, play along with the tutor and apply them in an ensemble.
What will we cover?
Topics and techniques will be drawn from the following:
- Flutter-tonguing
- Singing and playing (simultaneously)
- Multiphonics
- Pitch bending
- Whistle tones
- Alternative fingerings
- Alternative articulations
- Tone development.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Play an ensemble piece using at least one new technique
Understand some contemporary notation for extended techniques
Apply your new knowledge of extended techniques to your individual practice, tone development and creativity.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for intermediate to advanced flute players who are Grade 3 level and above. You should have at least 3 years of tuition, have a range of at least 2 octaves and be able to sight-read.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This is an in person clas which will be held in our Keeley Street campus.
-Classes will be led by tutor demonstration
-You will be taught in an ensemble music rehearsal setting where you may be expected to sight read.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You will need your instrument, a pencil and possible folder for your music. Stands will be provided.
All music will be provided by the tutor.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Regular instrumental classes include Flute intermediate, Flute: advanced, Clarinet repertoire, Clarinet: advanced workshop and ensembles.

Lindsey Fillingham (flute, piano, chamber music and improvisation tutor) graduated with BMus(Hons) from the University of Cape Town in 2009 and went on to study in Stockholm (KMH), Manchester (RNCM), and privately with Kate Hill (RAM). She has played with the likes of the Hallé, the Cape Philharmonic, and Orchestra of the Swan in venues including Royal Albert Hall, Bridgewater Hall and St Martin-in-the-Fields, has performed as a soloist with the Johannesburg Philharmonic, and broadcast for BBC’s Songs of Praise and Sunday Worship. Lindsey is carrying out PhD research at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, into group classical improvisation. She has led improvisation workshops and courses at the University of Cape Town, City Lit and Barbican’s OpenFest, amongst others. Lindsey loves performing to diverse communities, and is equally at home singing in school workshops or playing in care settings. She is a member of soundSPARK wind quartet and, with the Ashdown Duo, the Musicians in Hospitals and Care scheme. Lindsey is passionate about passing on the joy of music-making, and teaches at City Lit and Kensington Prep School.
