This short course will introduce the historic context of Johannes Vermeer's Delft, his biography, influences and close readings of some of his key artworks. What will we cover?
• The context of Vermeer’s Delft - society and politics, patrons etc. • Overview of Vermeer’s life, work and legacy. • Vermeer’s main influences, processes, techniques, development. • Close readings and discussion of several key works including The Girl with the Pearl Earring, The Milkmaid and Young Woman Seated at a Virginal.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Describe the socio-political context of Vermeer’s Delft • Identify key points in Vermeer’s life and list at least five works • Describe Vermeer’s process and development • Recognise key works by Vermeer and demonstrate a basic awareness of style and symbolism
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations and hand-outs. You should be willing to read the assigned texts as they will be key to certain aspects of our lectures and discussions.
This is an online course open to all levels. Students should be familiar with or willing to learn to use digital systems to engage with class materials. How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught by lecture with slide images and you will be invited to participate in group discussion. This course uses a Google Classroom to share supplementary materials. The tutor will post all documents course documents on the Google Classroom. The tutor cannot email documents for various reasons related to copyright and data protection.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You might wish to purchase a notebook for taking notes. You might wish to buy some of the books on any reading list provided for future study.
Leslie Primo has spent more than 15 years giving lectures to the general public at the National Gallery for the Information and Education departments. During this time he graduated with a degree in History of Art and an MA in Renaissance Studies from Birkbeck, University College of London. In his studies he specialised in early Medieval and Renaissance studies, including, Italian Renaissance Drawing, Art and Architecture in Europe 1250-1400 Art and Architecture in Europe 1400-1500, Medici and Patronage, Narrative Painting in the Age of Giotto, and the work of Peter Paul Rubens focusing on his paintings of the Judgement of Paris, and Greek Myth in paintings. He is also an accredited Art Society lecturer.
