What is the course about?

This course introduces you to the world of forensic science and the crime scene. You will devolop an understanding of what forensic anthropology is, together with how human remains, fluid, DNA and drug abuse issues are assessed and analysed. This is a highly interactive, task-based course in which we will look specifically at bones, decomposition, blood stain patterns, electrophoresis and poisons by investigating case studies, looking in detail through a microscope, making fake blood and extracting DNA. You will be participating in group discussion, written exercises and activities, all in a supportive, fun and engaging academic environment.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Describe what anthropology is and understand the concept of 'bone measurement'
Evaluate the process of examination of human remains
Identify basic types of blood splatter
Explain what DNA is
Assess basic types of poisons and drugs.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course and no prior knowledge is required. This is part 2 of a cycle of 3 courses but each are standalone courses too and beginners are very welcome. This is a highly interactive course and it is essential that you be willing to engage in practical class activities and work collaboratively with the tutor and your class members in a supportive and fun learning environment.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught using PowerPoint slides, through group discussions/debates written exercises and practical activities - this is a highly interactive course rather than a theoretical lecture based one.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No other costs. No equipment is required. Please bring a pen and notepad to class.
