French 2 upper: module 1

What is the course about?

This course develops all four language skills - speaking, listening, reading, and writing - through engaging, interactive activities. You will practise speaking in guided conversations and role‑plays, improve listening through real‑world audio, develop reading skills with short authentic texts, and build writing confidence through simple structured tasks such as emails or descriptions.

Alongside language learning, you will widen your knowledge of French‑speaking countries by exploring culture, daily life, and traditions through videos, discussions, and practical tasks linked to real‑life situations.

What will we cover?

• Topics covered
  Learners will explore autobiographical journeys and key moments in life, discuss different lifestyles, and talk about plans and aspirations for the future.

  Language focus
  The course revises and consolidates the past, present, and future tenses, while introducing relative pronouns (qui, que) and more complex and hypothetical sentence structures. Vocabulary development includes stages of life, new technologies, body parts, sports, and useful language for interacting and engaging in discussions with others.

  Cultural content
  Learners will discover French autobiographical novels and explore contemporary trends, including the rise of new sports in the French‑speaking world.

  (e.g. Quand j’avais vingt ans, j’ai commencé mes études à l’université, ce qui a beaucoup changé ma vie.)

• Exchange ideas about different lifestyles
  (e.g. La vie en ville est plus dynamique, tandis que la vie à la campagne est plus calme, à mon avis.)

• Talk about the future with confidence
  (e.g. À l’avenir, j’aimerais changer de carrière et vivre à l’étranger.)

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for learners who have studied French recently for approximately two years or who have equivalent knowledge of the language (CEFR A2). It is designed to support learners working towards CEFR B1 level, helping them move from basic communication to more confident and structured expression.

For example, learners progress from giving simple descriptions and opinions to linking ideas, narrating past experiences in more detail, and discussing familiar social topics with greater ease.

To join the course, you should be able to:

• describe where you live
• make comparisons between the past and the present
• express preferences and opinions
• share personal life experiences
• demonstrate some awareness of French laws that have had an impact on society

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material. Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.
