What is the course about?

This B1‑level course is designed to get you speaking French more freely and confidently. Through lively, real‑world contexts, you’ll sharpen your listening skills, boost your confidence, and deepen your understanding of French as you move comfortably from personal topics to wider social discussions.

What will we cover?

Topics covered
Learners will explore holidays (talking about past trips, future plans, and organising travel), musical tastes, and different lifestyles.

Language focus
The course includes revision of object and subject pronouns, the contrast between the imparfait and the passé composé, and adverbs. Learners are also introduced to the plus‑que‑parfait, the past infinitive, and the present conditional, enabling more nuanced expression of time, opinions, and hypotheses.

Cultural content
Cultural themes include the work of artists such as Matisse and Gauguin, the idea of peace through music, and superstitions in the French‑speaking world, encouraging discussion and comparison across cultures.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-Talk about the past using a range of past tenses with greater accuracy

  • (e.g. J’avais déjà terminé mes études quand j’ai commencé à travailler à l’étranger.)

  • Use pronouns more accurately in spoken and written French
(e.g. Ce film m’a beaucoup plu et je l’ai recommandé à mes amis.)

  • Express opinions and tastes on a variety of topics
(e.g. À mon avis, la vie en ville est plus intéressante, même si elle est parfois stressante.)

  • Use a wider and more precise range of vocabulary
(e.g. talking about culture, travel, lifestyle or personal interests with more specific words and expressions)

  • Structure more complex sentences to share ideas and opinions with others
(e.g. Je pense que la musique joue un rôle important dans la société parce qu’elle permet de rassembler les gens.)

Please note that the learning outcomes may vary depending on the general progress made by the students.
