in this 3-week course, we will study all sorts of French comedians, from the old guard of the 80s and 90s to the new 21st century generation. We will discover what has made French people laugh over the years, why some topics are chosen and to what purpose, and how the humoristic landscape has evolved in the past 40 years, acting as a mirror to the evolution of French society.
What will we cover?
We will start with a general presentation of what French humour looks like, what it is generally thought of in France and abroad and we will then study a selection of comedian that span three different generations. - The first, who thrived in the 80s and 90s (Pierre Desproges, Elie Kakou, Coluche, Guy Bedos, Muriel Robin...) - The second, who saw the change of century and the birth of French stand-up (Gad Elmaleh, Florence Foresti, Jamel Debbouze, Blanche Gardin...) - The third, who grew up in the 21st century (Nawel Madani, Melha Bedia, Artus, Paul Mirabel and many more).
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- identify a wider selection of French comedians from different generations - have a better understanding of what makes French people laugh and why - use and and understand specific vocabulary related to humour - discuss and debate the styles and topics used in French humour.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Bonjour! My name is Julie and I am from Nice, Côte d'azur. I have been teaching French in the UK since 2005 so it has been... a while. I started in Edinburgh, Scotland, where I graduated with an MCs in Language Teaching form the University of Edinburgh, and taught at Edinburgh Napier University and at the University of Edinburgh Life Long learning school. I then came to London where I started teaching at Citylit in 2011. I was also a French teacher at Queen Mary University of London for 7 seven years. I enjoy teaching languages and am very passionate to share and transmit my passion for my language. I make a point to create a relaxed atmosphere in my class, but I am very organised. So fear not! With me you will learn and have fun at the same time! In addition to my teaching, I work as an Administrtor for City LIt's Languages department (so you might speak to me on the phone!) and I have been occupying the position of Spanish Coordinator since June 2023. I hope to see you soon in class. A bientôt!
