What is the course about?

The course aims to practise and improve reading skills, comprehension of different writing styles and registers, and improve speaking skills, through the reading and appreciation of plays by French-speaking authors.

What will we cover?

We will read and discuss plays written by French and Francophone playwrights, classical and modern, humorous
and serious. We will study 3 plays throughout the term.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- enjoy a wider knowledge of French / francophone theatre
- express opinions with more confidence
- read a variety of texts with greater fluency.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Level 5, ie an advanced knowledge of French is required.
You should be prepared to read aloud in French in class.

It is also essential that you have knowledge of more complex grammar terminology such as: the subjunctive, the conditional, direct and indirect speech, pronouns.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

We will read and discuss 3 plays over the year. The tutor will suggest at least the first play, but
suggestions from the group are welcome. Where possible, the course will include video excerpts and interviews
related to the plays. You will be asked to read a few scenes at home too, ahead of the second session for each
play. There will be optional written homework.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to obtain the selected texts (all available in paperback). The first playwill be : "Le barbier de Seville" - Beaumarchais.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
