French beginners: module 3

What is the course about?

This course aims to further develop your knowledge of French while consolidating what you have already learned. It also broadens your understanding of the French‑speaking world.

What will we cover?

Topics covered include daily routines and habits, preferences, and asking and answering questions in a range of real‑life situations, such as in cafés, shops, and at train stations.

Language focus includes the present tense of reflexive verbs and additional irregular verbs; question words; adverbs of frequency; negative forms; the passé composé of regular verbs; temporal connectives; telling the time; days and times of the week; daily routine activities; and describing personal and physical characteristics.

Cultural content explores everyday routines across the French‑speaking world, with a particular focus on daily life in Paris.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Talk about your habits and daily routine
  (e.g. Je me lève tôt. Je fais du sport trois fois par semaine.)

• Ask others about their habits
  (e.g. À quelle heure tu te lèves ? Tu travailles le week‑end ?)

• Talk about what you have done recently
  (e.g. J’ai travaillé hier. J’ai regardé un film ce matin.)

• Take part in short, real‑life conversations
  (e.g. ordering in a café, asking for information in a shop or at a train station: Je voudrais un billet, s’il vous plaît.)

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is intended for students who have completed French Beginners: Module 2 or who have studied French recently for approximately one year. Learners should feel confident using verbs in the present tense.

To join the course, you should be able to:

• talk about your family
• talk about your daily routine
• talk about your free time and leisure activities
• describe the area where you live
• talk about your interests

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material. Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

This course uses Google Classroom, a digital learning platform where all the teaching and learning resources can be found. Here are some common answers to questions about Google Classroom.

We also offer language support sessions for beginner students giving them an opportunity to dispel doubts about the language. These are delivered entirely in English and are ideal for those aspects of the language or language learning that beginners tend to find challenging. Places can only be booked once you have started the course. For more information, please ask your tutor.

We suggest that you do not purchase the course book until after the first class.

Please note that you might not cover all the activities in the book during the course.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Continue your French learning with French 2 Lower: Module 1. Enrol early to secure your place, as numbers are limited. Your tutor can advise you if you are unsure about progression.
